How Does Denver Stack Up Against Other Tech Cities?

The website “FindTheHome” has developed a slick way to compare census data across multiple cities in the United States. Using their tool, we put Denver alongside some of the other top technology cities in the US. This enabled us to make the following comparisons:

Population

Denver – 619,000

Houston – 2,130,000

Los Angeles – 3,830,000

Seattle – 622,000

Denver and Seattle are incredibly close in terms of population, whereas Houston and LA each have at least 3 times the number of people living there. Unsurprisingly, this leads to far worse traffic…

Average Commute Time

Denver – 26.7 Minutes

Houston – 27.8 Minutes

Los Angeles - 30.7 Minutes

Seattle – 27.2 Minutes

Denver actually has the shortest average commute among these cities. In addition, because we know what’s really important, we want to note that you’re pretty likely to be able to find a coffee shop somewhere along the way…

Coffee Shops Per Capita

Denver – 9.77 Per Person

Houston – 7.89 Per Person

Los Angeles – 7.97 Per Person

Seattle – 17.87 Per Person

Seattle is obviously the king of coffee but Denver comes in second. This may have something do with Denver’s low unemployment rate, which means more people have the disposable income to afford specialty coffee…

Unemployment Rates

Denver – 9.4%

Houston – 10%

Los Angeles – 12.6%

Seattle – 7.4%

If these numbers look high, it’s because the census data we’re looking at is for 2013. Things have changed dramatically since then: here’s the latest figures, for October 2014, according the US Department of Labor:

Unemployment Rates (Oct 2014)

Denver – 3.7%

Houston – 4.7%

Los Angeles – 7.2%

Seattle – 5.0%

These are just a few of the comparisons that FindTheHome makes available. Check it out! We think you’ll leave convinced that Denver is one of the top cities, if not THE top city, in the United States!
